Beautiful British Columbia: Whales, Salmon, and Grizzlies

Explore beautiful British Columbia as we search for humpback whales, seals, dolphins, and grizzly bears enjoying the spawning salmon. Relax in luxurious eco-lodges, while being hosted by the Klahoose nation; providing us with stories and the conservation principles which have guided their peoples for generations. Enjoy gourmet meals of fresh west coast crab, salmon, and sea food, with opportunities to photograph the local wildlife, kayak along the coastline, or spend time learning from our indigenous hosts.

August 21: Fly (or drive) to Powell River, BC

Fly or drive to Powell River, BC, arriving anytime before 2pm. Upon arrival Randy and Marjorie will greet you with warm face towels and champagne, before transferring you to the float plane dock for our 4pm charter flight (included) over the Coast mountains, channels, and fjords to the Sailcone’s Grizzly Bear Lodge. After settling in at the eco-friendly lodge, we will take a short ‘safari’ to photograph Black Bears feeding on the beach. Return to the lodge for a delicious dinner, with a briefing on the wildlife and environment that we’ll be seeing.

August 22 – 23: Knight’s Inlet

After a delicious breakfast, choose between Orca whale viewing in the Johnson Strait, or photographing Grizzly Bears from a flat-bottomed boat in a nearby estuary. This area is abundant with Stellar Sea Lions, Harbor Seals, White Sided Dolphins, Dall’s Porpoises, and countless bald eagles. After a picnic lunch, spend some more time with the resident wildlife, before returning to Sailcone’s Grizzly Bear Lodge for dinner and a few stories around the campfire.

August 24: April Point Lodge, Quadra Island

Enjoy another morning with the Grizzly bears or the Orca whales on the Glendale River Estuary. After a gourmet lunch at the lodge, board our charter plane (included) for our afternoon flight to Campbell River and a night at the April Point Lodge. Dinner will be served overlooking the ocean, while we hear what we have in store for us on the second half of our tour to Desolation Sound.

August 25, 26, 27: Desolation Sound

After breakfast by the water, we will board a water taxi for a 90 minute cruise up Desolation Sound to the Klahoose Wilderness Resort where we will spend the next 3 nights. This eco-resort is owned and operated by the Klahoose First Nation on their traditional territory within the heart of BC’s pristine coastline. Here we will be immersed in an authentic cultural experience, spending time indigenous interpreters who will help us learn a little about their traditional culture. Here we will cruise (1 hour) in a covered boat past some spectacular water falls on our way to Toba Inlet. Using hidden viewing platforms, our Klahoose guides will help us get as close as possible to the Grizzly’s while respecting their natural habitat. Return to the lodge for gourmet dinners featuring west coast seafood, while over looking the water and discussing what we learned from our local guides. There will be ample time to rest, read, kayak, stand up paddle board, ocean swim, walk the nature trails, and star gaze.

August 28: Return to Powell River & Departure

Following breakfast, we’ll board our water taxi for a 60 minute cruise through this remote paradise to Lund (followed by a 30 min shuttle from there to Powell River), in time for you to catch your flight back to Vancouver (or alternative transportation back to your car) … while revelling in the fact that you have memories of a unique ‘safari’ in your own country!

Included for this safari:

  • En-suite accommodations (based on double occupancy) as per the itinerary.
  • All meals (wine and beer at meals) at Klahoose Wilderness Lodge.
  • Charter flights from Powell River – Sailcone’s Lodge – Powell River.
  • Exceptional English-speaking Indigenous guides, knowledgeable of local region and culture.
