February 7, 8: Flight to Cape Town, South Africa
A comfortable international flight takes you to Cape Town, South Africa (arriving on Feb. 8). Upon arrival, Dave will welcome and transfer you to the nearby Portswood Hotel for the night.
February 9: The Peninsula, Cape Point & the Cape of Good HopeThe day starts on the Peninsula with a coastal drive through Clifton, Camps Bay, Hout Bay, and a stop on Chapman’s Peak for some breathtaking views. Then to the “reserve” as local surfers call it, for a visit to the southernmost tip of Africa at Cape Point and the famous Cape of Good Hope, followed by a visit to the Simons Town area to view the Boulders Penguin Colony. A special lunch (included) will be enjoyed on the False Bay stretch of coastline between Millers Point and Kalk Bay Harbour. We then head out to the Groot Constantia Wine region to taste this area’s fine wines, made famous by Louis XIV and Napolean. If time permits, Dave will choose a second estate for another wine tasting before heading back to our Portswood Hotel.
February 10: Robben Island & Table MountainCross the bay by boat to Robben Island, a World Heritage Site, where Nelson Mandela was incarcerated for 18 of his 27 years in prison. Our guide will be a one of the former political prisoners who was imprisoned here during the Apartheid regime. Return to the Cape, and after a delicious lunch (included), take a cable car up beautiful Table Mountain where we will have time to stroll around the top with some of the most incredible vistas in the country. After descending the mountain, we will visit Bo-Kaap (the Malay Quarter) before returning to the Portswood for the night.
February 11: Johannesburg & The Apartheid MuseumAfter breakfast, we will transfer to the airport in time for our short domestic flight (not included) to Johannesburg. Upon arrival, we will transfer to our hotel to unpack and then drive to the world famous Apartheid Museum. Opened in 2001, it is acknowledged as the preeminent museum in the world dealing with 20th century South Africa, at the heart of which is the apartheid story. A series of twenty-two individual exhibition areas take us through a dramatic and emotional journey that tells a story of a state-sanctioned system based on racial discrimination and the long struggle to overthrow this tyranny. After this extremely educational experience and a chance to process it all, we will return to the Winston Hotel for dinner and the night.
February 12: Soweto Township TourAfter breakfast, we will be collected for our 8 hour tour of Soweto Township, igniting our senses and immersing us in true South African culture. Soweto is similarly significant for its role in the struggle against apartheid, with highlights including a visit to the Hector Pieterson Museum, Nelson Mandela’s original house; Regina Mundi Church; an authentic lunch with a Sowetan family; driving tour through this large township; and an important discussion regarding the challenges and issues facing Sowetans today. After another emotionally charged day, we will return to the Winston Hotel for dinner and the night.
February 13, 14, 15: Kapama Private Wildlife ReserveAfter a delicious breakfast, drive through the breathtaking Panorama Route to the Kapama Private Wildlife Reserve bordering Kruger National Park. Here we will enjoy day and night safari drives providing us with the chance to photograph the full range of African wildlife (eg. lions, leopards, rhino, giraffe, buffalo, elephant, etc). Spend three nights at the award winning Kapama Buffalo Camp featuring eco-friendly accommodations with en-suite bathrooms, hot showers, and solar electricity.
